I started seeing Dr.Bruno around 4 years ago, at that time I was interested in getting an operation on my brain to help stop the seizures I was having quite often due to traumatic brain injury. At that time before the operation I had to stay in the hospital to find out where the seizures were coming from, I was in the hospital for about 1 month, so I asked the Doctor if I could go home with the wires on my head and use a camera to do the test at home. Funny that I stayed in the hospital for a month and I didn’t have any seizures because the first night I went home I had one. At that time Dr. Bruno said that before I would be able to have an operation that I had to try a new medicine first. Before seeing him I was up to taking 18 pills a day, and Dr. Bruno and Dr. Anschel told me that they were very surprised I haven’t overdosed. So Dr. Bruno switched my medication, so now instead of 18 pills daily, I only take 3. Since I have switched to these pills which is a very lot less then I was taking before, I have not had a seizure for four years now !! Since I haven’t had seizures in such a long time, I actually am doing so much better, I actually fall asleep every night without worrying if I am going to have another seizure. My drivers’ license is clean now, and I can drive myself around wherever I want and go shopping! Since my accident in 1993, I have seen 4 other neurologists, and I think of all of them Dr. Bruno has done the best job. I actually feel normal again.

LBP and Neurology Stony Brook NYNeurological Causes of Lower Back Pain

Have you gone through many methods of trying to ease your back pain? At Three Village Neurology, Dr. James Bruno is an expert in treating various neurological and muscular ailments.

If traditional means of treatment are not working for you, consider contacting our neurologist near Stony Brook to take the first step towards treating your acute or chronic back pain.

But First, What Causes Low Back Pain?

Occasionally, it can be challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of your low back pain, as your symptoms could originate from a result of various stimulants. Examples of these can include the following:

  • Trauma or injury to the area in pain.
  • Overuse or strenuous activity over an extended period.
  • Repeated improper use (i.e., incorrect lifting technique, prolonged exposure to vibration).
  • Degeneration of vertebrae (can be the result of reduced muscle tone in the back which helps to support the spine).
  • Overweight or obesity (excess weight will put extra pressure on the spine and discs).
  • Slipped (Herniated) Discs are the result of degenerative conditions along the spine
  • Neuropathy, a chronic disease of the nervous system
  • Spinal Stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal

These are just a few causes of back-related pain, but there exist many more. Our neurologist near Stony Brook can assist you in diagnosing the exact cause. While it is essential to understand the physical causes of low back pain, it is equally important to know the neurological causes.

Neurological Causes of Chronic Back Pain

Since the spinal column and lower back are connected to highly sensitive nerves, neurological conditions can easily arise in the lower back. These conditions, such as pinched nerves, slipped discs, and spinal stenosis can all be caused by injury or excessive pressure being put on the nerves over time. Pain in the lower back can also be caused by underlying neurological disorders that require diagnostic testing in order to be determined. It’s important to see our neurologist near Stony Brook determine if there is a neurological cause to your back pain.

How Else Can You Prevent Low Back Pain?

  • Practice good posture
    • Issues with posture can be a leading cause of back pain. Those who always slouch when they sit, stand, or walk are putting themselves at risk for back discomfort. Focus on keeping your shoulders pinched, and your head facing forward to prevent slouching.
  • Be mindful of proper lifting form
    • Whether you are in the gym performing intricate lifts, or just picking up your kids, be aware that there are right and wrong ways to lift. Try to use your legs when you lift, by squatting down, keeping your back straight, shoulders pinched, and head up. Be sure not to bend down and lift something using the strength of your back alone, as they can place a tremendous amount of stress on your lower body.

Stroke Treatment by neurologist near Stony BrookSteps To Prevent Future Stroke

In order to prevent a stroke, you first need to know what a stroke is. When blood flow is cut off from the brain, a stroke will occur. Strokes can occur in any portion of the brain. Since the brain cells are being deprived of oxygen, these cells will begin to die, and the abilities controlled by the affected areas are lost. A stroke can affect anyone at any age, so it is extremely important to start stroke prevention methods as early as possible. If you have any questions or concerns regarding ways to help prevent a stroke from occurring, contact our neurologist near Stony Brook for more information.

How to prevent a stroke

There are some risk factors that make people more susceptible to having a stroke that you can not control, like age or family history. Other risk factors can be monitored and controlled with healthy habits. Some ways to lower your risk of having a stroke include:

  • Lower Your Blood Pressure– High blood pressure is one of the biggest contributors to having a stroke. By keeping your blood pressure around 140/90, or even 135/85, you can lower your risk of having a stroke considerably.
  • Lose Weight- Obesity, which can be linked to high blood pressure, can also raise your odds of having a stroke. Ideally having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or less, will be best for reducing your chances of a stroke.
  • Quit Smoking – Smoking is known to accelerate clots forming because it thickens your blood and increases the amount of plaque buildup in the arteries.
  • Stay Physically Active – Exercise clearly contributes to losing weight and lowering blood pressure, but it also is a sole dependent stroke reducer. Start by taking a walk in the morning at least 5 days a week.

After our neurologist near Stony Brook gives an examination, the next step may be to use an electromyogram for further evaluation. This will track the electrical activity of your muscles to show if any muscle damage has occurred.  It will also rule out other conditions to determine what the best course of action for treatment is.
