Neuropathy and Sleep Disorders

In neurology, many disorders and diseases affect millions of people in the world. Many of these disorders are very common. Two of these common neurological issues are neuropathy and sleep disorders. Both of these disorders can be detrimental to one’s health and daily routine. There are various forms and reasons for these disorders, and we will be looking at each of them in further detail.

Neuropathy

One of the most common neurological disorders is peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy occurs when one’s peripheral nerves become damaged. Damaging the peripheral nerves can cause a risk to several health issues. The damage can be very detrimental to the body because the peripheral nerves help send your brain messages to the rest of your body. Numbness and pain in the hands or feet usually occur when suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Other symptoms include pain that occurs with stabbing, tingling, or burning sensations. Symptoms can worsen if the neuropathy is a result of an underlying illness. Many factors can cause peripheral neuropathy to an individual, including infections, traumatic injuries, metabolic issues, and commonly diabetes mellitus. To diagnose neuropathy, a nerve function test must be performed. Sleeping disorders can be a risk to one’s health if they do not experience proper sleeping habits. These issues can also affect your daily routines due to the lack of sleep you are getting. Some examples of sleeping disorders are insomnia, sleep apnea, snoring, and restless leg syndrome. There are several symptoms you can be experiencing that may indicate a sleeping disorder. Some of these symptoms include difficulty sleeping, loud snoring, waking up at night, headaches when waking up, acting out dreams, and unintentional sleeping. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should try to identify these issues’ underlying causes. The cause of these symptoms could be the result of a sleeping disorder. You can perform many studies and tests to diagnose if you are suffering from sleeping issues or a disorder. For more information on sleeping disorders, check out our link here.

Treatment

Like every disorder or disease, there is some form of treatment for it. There are several treatment methods for both neuropathy and sleep disorders. Treatment for peripheral neuropathy varies based on the cause of the neuropathy. If an individual has neuropathy from vitamin deficiency, they can be treated through vitamin therapy and a well-planned diet. Another example would be if an individual has neuropathy from diabetes, they can be treated carefully, watching their blood sugar levels. There are many different treatment types for peripheral neuropathy, but it all depends on the cause of neuropathy. However, it is essential to treat peripheral neuropathy as early as possible because your peripheral nerves only have limited capacity for regenerating. Like neuropathy, treatment for sleeping disorders also varies. It depends on what sleeping disorder someone is suffering from, to determine a proper treatment plan. A few examples of treatments for sleeping disorders are sleeping pills, melatonin, a dental guard, medications prescribed for underlying diseases, surgery, breathing devices, and allergy medication. In other cases, you may just need to fix your lifestyle routines. Some examples of these are fixing your diet, drinking less water before bed, creating a sleep schedule, etc.
